What is traditional Chinese medicine?

Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) is an alternative medical practice drawn from traditional medicine in China and is becoming increasingly prevalent around the world.

TCM is built on a foundation of more than 2,000 years of Chinese medical practice, including herbal medicine, acupuncture, massage (Tuina), exercise (Qigong), and dietary therapy. It is primarily used as a complementary alternative medicine approach.

TCM is one of the world’s most ancient medical systems. It is a distinct and independent medical system originating from China more than 2000 years ago following a long history of practical observation and experiences. TCM has been developing since then until the modern days. Over the long history of clinical practice and theoretical development committed by TCM practitioners and scholars, TCM has developed a systemic and integrative medical system with its theoretical framework in physiopathology and therapeutics of human diseases. For thousands of years, TCM has played a major role in maintaining the health of the Chinese population.

TCM uses the concepts of Yin-Yang, five elementary, Zang-Fu, meridian and collaterals, and natural and emotional factors to describe and differentiate physiological functions or disease processes. TCM uses holistic approaches to diagnosing, preventing and treating diseases by identifying holistic patterns of human body conditions through syndrome differentiation and then applying an appropriate single or combination of the main therapeutic methods including acupuncture, Chinese herbal medicine and massage (Tuina). This is the unique characteristics that distinguish TCM from orthodox medicine.
