Traditional Chinese Medicine
Acupuncture
Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) is thousands of years old and has changed little over the centuries. Its basic concept is that a vital force of life, called Qi, surges through the body.
Any imbalance in Qi can cause disease and illness. This imbalance is most commonly thought to be caused by an alteration in the opposite and complementary forces that make up the Qi. These are called yin and yang.
Acupuncture involves the insertion of very thin needles through your skin at strategic points on your body. A key component of traditional Chinese medicine, acupuncture is most commonly used to treat pain. Increasingly, it is being used for overall wellness, including stress management.
TCM explains acupuncture as a technique for balancing the flow of energy or life force — known as qi — believed to flow through pathways (meridians) in your body.
Massage
Massage therapy has been a central part of Chinese medicine for thousands of years, with records dating back 2 centuries BC. Contrary to deep tissue massage or to Sports massage, which focuses on releasing knots and muscle tension by targeting blood flow to areas, Chinese massage techniques also aim to promote overall health by facilitating the flow of energy or Qi around the body.
Cupping therapy
Cupping therapy is a type of alternative therapy that involves placing cups on the skin to create suction. This suction is thought to improve the flow of energy in the body and facilitate healing.
One of the oldest medical texts to mention cupping therapy is Eber’s papyrus (1550 B.C.) from Ancient Egypt, though cupping is a part of many ancient healing systems, including Chinese, Unani, traditional Korean, and Tibetan.
These days, cupping therapy is usually found as a treatment offered by practitioners of TCM.
Many believe that cupping helps balance yin and yang, or the negative and positive, within the body. Restoring balance between these two extremes is thought to help with the body’s resistance to pathogens as well as its ability to increase blood flow and reduce pain.
Herbal Medicine
Herbal medicines are those with active ingredients made from plant parts, such as leaves, roots or flowers. But being "natural" does not necessarily mean they're safe for you to take. Just like conventional medicines, herbal medicines will affect the body, and can be potentially harmful if not used correctly. Therefore, seeking professional help and purchasing herbal medicine from a trusted clinic is recommended.
If you're consulting your GP or pharmacist about health issues, or are about to undergo surgery, please always tell them about any herbal medicines you're taking.
