What is Acupuncture?
Acupuncture is a treatment derived from ancient Chinese medicine in which fine needles are inserted at certain sites in the body for therapeutic or preventative purposes. It is often seen as a form of complementary or alternative medicine (CAM), although it is used in many NHS general practices, as well as the majority of pain clinics and hospices in the UK.

Acupoints
Acupuncture is the stimulation of specific acupuncture points along the skin of the body using thin needles. It is a form of alternative medicine.

According to traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) theory, acupoints are specifically chosen sites of acupuncture manipulation, and also the basis for studying the mechanism of acupuncture. Stimulating different acupoints on the body's surface could provide various therapeutic benefits.

Does Acupuncture Hurt?
Acupuncture needles bear little resemblance to the needles used in injections and blood tests. They are much finer and solid, not hollow.
When a needle is inserted, the sensation is often described as a tingling, dull ache or warm feeling. Needles are inserted and left in place for thirty minutes or more, depending on the effect required.
During treatment, patients commonly experience a pleasant feeling of relaxation. The benefits of acupuncture frequently include more than just relief from a particular condition. Many people find that it can also lead to increased energy levels, as well as better appetite and sleep, and an enhanced sense of overall well-being.
The most common mechanism of stimulation of acupuncture points employs penetration of the skin by thin metal needles, which are manipulated manually.

Acupuncture needles are typically made of stainless steel, making them flexible and preventing them from rusting or breaking. Needles are disposed of after each use to prevent contamination. Needles vary in length between 13 to 130 millimetres (0.51 to 5.12 in), with shorter needles used near the face and eyes, and longer needles in areas with thicker tissues; needle diameters vary from 0.16 mm (0.006 in) to 0.46 mm (0.018 in). The thinner needles are applied to more sensitive areas.
Acupuncture is commonly used for pain relief, though it is also used to treat a wide range of conditions. The majority of people who seek out acupuncture do so for musculoskeletal problems, including low back pain, shoulder stiffness, and knee pain. Acupuncture is rarely used alone but rather as an adjunct to other treatment modalities.
How will I feel after acupuncture?
You may feel rather relaxed and calm. If the treatment has been particularly strong you could feel quite tired or drowsy for a few hours, and you should take this into account if you are planning to drive or use machinery. Occasionally there may be a short-term flair-up of your symptoms as your Qi clears and resettles itself.

Potential Risks
The risks of acupuncture are low if you have a competent, certified acupuncture practitioner (Like us!) using sterile needles. Common side effects include soreness and minor bleeding or bruising where the needles were inserted. We use single-use, disposable needles at our clinic, so the risk of infection is minimal.

Before having acupuncture treatment, be sure to tell our doctor if you:

-
Have a bleeding disorder - Your chances of bleeding or bruising from the needles may be increased if you have a bleeding disorder or if you're taking blood thinners
-
Have a pacemaker - Acupuncture that involves applying mild electrical pulses to the needles may potentially interfere with a pacemaker's operation.
-
Are pregnant - Some acupuncture points are thought to stimulate labour, which could result in a premature delivery.
